Acting Head’s Welcome

St Michael’s Prep and Pre-Prep boast some of the finest facilities in Kent. Set in a stunning 90 acre site of woodland, grass playing fields, tennis courts, cricket nets and pitches, football pitches, adventure play and an enviable swimming pool, the children can be fit and free to enjoy an outdoor education. Once inside the beautiful manor house, there is a homely and safe environment where lessons take place in dedicated teaching rooms, by well-qualified specialist teachers. Children can learn everything an independent education can offer and prepare to go on to a range of senior schools, both state and independent.

St Michael’s school is a non-selective coeducational school promoting a rich, varied, broad and balanced education within a Christian context. We challenge and stimulate pupils to achieve their best and strive for excellence in all that they do; fostering in them a sense of wonder, and joy in learning, so that they take real pride in their accomplishments. Children are helped to understand themselves as individuals, their feelings and emotions, how they can affect others and to show tolerance and respect for the diversity of the world in which we live.

Culturally the school provides a wide sporting, musical, artistic and dramatic programme to which all pupils are equally entitled and in which all children are encouraged to participate.

We recognise that every child is an individual and aim to promote their happiness, self-confidence and well-being as members of a caring community. Children are given opportunities to make a difference to their school and to the wider world. The school motto; perseverance, wisdom, gratitude encapsulates the cornerstones of this education.

Through perseverance children learn to win and lose gracefully, overcome difficulties and gain resilience. As their knowledge grows, the school teaches children to have the wisdom to use this knowledge well and to be grateful for all the blessings they receive in life and in their education.

From good fortune springs a responsibility to care for others and in this caring, through charitable work, the Christian commitment to love one another is translated into action.

Our education starts in Pre-Prep, a first class, newly built facility with carefully planned classroom suites, its own dining room and hall and guaranteed year-round outdoor learning space on the beautiful horseshoe-shaped wood and glass balconies and dedicated specialist rooms for art, music, sport and IT, some in our fabulously refurbished stable block. Throughout their time at St Michael’s all pupils enjoy the well-rounded curriculum and extensive range of extra-curricular activities on offer and the spiritual and moral guidance that a Christian foundation bestows. We help prepare pupils for entry to the Kent Grammar Schools at 11+ and have achieved a strong, consistent pass rate over many years. Increasing numbers are now staying on to the end of Year 8 and we are proud of our record of placing these pupils into a wide range of senior independent schools, and of the scholarships that are won.

Parents enjoy the events organised by the Parents and Friends Association, including a quiz night, summer ball, Christmas bazaar and spring fayre and many long term friendships are made via having children in the same class or year group. Our International Club supports families, who have moved or returned to Britain from abroad and publishes an extremely useful alternative Survival Guide for St Michael’s parents. We warmly welcome you to come and see what we have on offer here. I’m sure you’ll catch the special family atmosphere here and want to join us. Do call Jane Thornton our registrar to arrange a visit or email jthornton@stmichaels.kent.sch.uk

Mary Bridges Acting Head

The governors of St. Michael’s Prep School take pleasure in announcing the appointment of Nik Pears as our new Head Teacher with effect from January 2021.

Nik was educated at St Dunstan’s College, London and is a graduate of Cambridge University. He is currently Head of Prep at Kent College Pembury, a post he has held since 2016. Prior to that, he was Headmaster of the Junior School at Sevenoaks Prep for 5 years. Nik is also an ISI inspector and a governor at Dulwich Prep, Cranbrook. We believe that he has the experience and qualities required to lead St Michael’s into the next chapter of its history.

Nik represented Kent U18 group at rugby and has a love of all sports. He is an accomplished musician and has performed at The O2 and Wembley Arenas. He is an Ambassador for “We See Hope”, a charity working with orphans and vulnerable young people in sub Saharan Africa. Nik devised The Social Entrepreneurs Project an initiative that challenges young people to turn £10 seed capital into £100 or more with their profits going to support the work of the charity.

We feel very fortunate to have secured Nik’s headship and welcome him and his wife Emma and two children, Jessica and Josiah into the St. Michael’s family from the start of next year. Nik has said

“I am delighted to have been appointed the next Head of St Michael’s Prep. Having lived in the area for the past twenty years, it is a school I have known and long admired for its ambitious and child-centred approach to learning. There is a very special atmosphere in the school and I am excited to become a part of the community, getting to know the children, parents and staff over the months and years ahead. St Michael’s is privileged to have an experienced and committed Senior Leadership Team and I very much look forward to working together with them as we embark on an exciting future for the school.”
