St Michael’s Prep School is celebrating an exceptional athletics season following outstanding performances at the Kent Prep Schools Athletics Championships and the National Prep Schools Athletics Championships.
During the Kent Championships at Julie Rose Stadium, Ashford, on Friday 12th June, pupils from Years 5 to 8 competed with great determination and team spirit. St Michael's Grace P became Kent Champion in the U13 Long Jump and finished 2nd in the U13 200m, while Hugo M claimed 2nd place in the U13 1500m with a personal best performance. Zach R-B secured 2nd place in the U12 600m and Nzu O finished 2nd in the U12 Long Jump, despite competing above her age group.
These impressive results saw all four athletes qualify for the National Championships where they competed against the best young athletes from across the country.
The highlight of the national event, taking place on Wednesday 1st July at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, came from Grace P, who produced a superb personal best of 4.78m to win the U13 Long Jump National Title, becoming the second St Michael’s pupil in history to be crowned a National Athletics Champion. She also recorded a personal best in the U13 200m.
Hugo M continued his excellent season with a personal best of 4:59 in the U13 1500m, while Zach R-B delivered another outstanding performance to finish 9th in the country in the U12 600m. Year 5 pupil Nzu O gained valuable experience competing against older athletes in the U12 Long Jump and performed admirably on the national stage.
Commenting on the athletes' success, Director of Sport at St Michael's Prep, Steve Brightman said: "The achievements of Grace, Hugo, Zach and Nzu are a testament to their hard work, dedication and resilience in athletics. Throughout both competitions, they represented St Michael’s with tremendous pride, sportsmanship and determination, giving the whole school community much to celebrate."
