The Physical Education department at St Michael’s is totally committed to providing the very best sporting opportunities for, and enriching the lives of, our pupils. Whatever stage your child is at in their sporting career, you can be reassured that we will cater for them and help them perform to the best of their ability. We encourage pupils to shine and so we provide situations where your child can achieve success and make progress. We aim to promote an enjoyment of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle and, at the same time, increase the skill levels of our pupils giving them an understanding of the benefits that individual and team sports have to offer. We run teams in a wide variety of sports, giving all pupils the opportunity of representing their school an appropriate level. Some pupils perform at a higher level in the IAPS competitions at an appropriate level.
The boys’ games are taught by specialist teachers. All of our boys play football in the Michaelmas term, rugby in the Lent term and cricket in the Trinity term. They progress at their own level and the boys’ games department takes great care to provide the best opportunity for every boy to develop his skills and achieve his potential. All our boys play matches against other local schools every week where possible and certain teams enter local tournaments.
Off piste – in addition to our timetabled sport, our children take part in a variety of other sports and sports meetings. Our Cross Country team enjoys participating in local meetings and the IAPS Cross Country meet. Athletics matches and the IAPS Athletics meeting are a big part of the summer term’s activities; the swimming team enjoy local galas and the IAPS gala; in the past some of our older skiers have entered Kent and ESSKIA ski races; tennis fixtures have just become part of school life for a few pupils too.
Some of these activities are also part of the activities programme, which runs after school.
Our older girls all play hockey in the Michaelmas term, netball in the Lent term and rounders and cricket in the Trinity term. Our Year 3 and 4 girls currently play two terms of netball before transferring to rounders and cricket . They are taught by specialist teachers who take great care to ensure that the girls reach their potential in each of these sports. Your daughter will have opportunities to flourish and to improve her skill set. All our girls play in matches against local schools. In addition, certain teams are entered into local tournaments as well as the IAPS netball tournament, IAPS rounders tournament and, on occasions, the IAPS hockey tournament.
