Prep Art, Craft & Design

In the St Michael’s Prep Art, Craft and Design department we foster a vibrant, creative, safe environment that is both stimulating and challenging, we aim to cultivate critical enquiry and provide students with a strong technical skill set for achieving their aesthetic goals. Your son/daughter will explore a wide range of 2D and 3D materials, tools and techniques, both traditional, contemporary and experimental. Emphasis is placed upon developing creativity, craftsmanship and the confidence to communicate, reflect and express individual ideas and feelings in visual and practical ways.

Together we will explore ideas and meanings from the work of many artists, crafts people and designers from different times and cultures and the natural world, helping our students to learn about and appreciate the functions of art, craft and design in their own lives and those of others. Our beautiful grounds offer many opportunities for working creatively outside, and to capture the inspiring environment around them.

DT includes Textiles, Resistant Materials and Graphic Design: Pupils will learn how to research briefs, analyse existing products, investigate professional art, craft and designers and develop their own specifications from a given brief. They will then generate design solutions by hand alongside CAD/CAM technologies.

Year 8 art continues the development of sketchbook practice through natural forms and contemporary portraiture – exploring mixed-media techniques, drawing, painting, printing, photography, textiles and sculpture.
