This week had excitement almost every day but perhaps the happiest day was Wednesday with our Open Morning, when we showed over 90 people around our fine school. To say that they were impressed would be an understatement. Everywhere they caught the sense of buzz and excitement. Everywhere I met engaging teachers, enthusiastic parents and impressive pupils who showed our visitors everything that St Michael’s can do.
Thank you to all the parents who joined us to talk about life at St Michael’s, to all the teachers and children who rearranged their timetables to show every aspect of our curriculum and to my colleagues Jane Thornton, Karen Voce and Sara Martin whose endless energy and strategic thinking was matched by meticulous organisation.
I enjoyed listening to the story of Maria Supple, mother of Maddie and Emma in Year 5, who came to talk to assembly on Monday and on Friday about Bulgaria from which her family originates. Combining interesting facts about this country with her personal story of being born to refugees escaping Bulgaria under communism was a particularly poignant part of the assembly. In Pre-Prep the girls led Bulgarian line dancing to close the assembly and everyone was smiling and tapping their toes as they left today.
In Prep today we raised money for Motor Neurone disease sufferers. Researched by the children and presented as our charity in Wednesday’s assembly, everyone has thought about the impact of being trapped in a body that doesn’t function as well as the mind.
On my jaunt to St Paul’s Cathedral School this week the bursar was able to give us a glimpse of history. As the archeological excavations for building a new boarding house begin, they have dug down deep enough to get to the evidence of the fire of London and I was able to observe, as well as a medieval floor to a previous building, the black fire damage lines in one level of the foundations that they have dug. Truly amazing to see with one’s own eyes.
The following night our own Governors met to discuss staffing committee issues. I am grateful for the endless support and time dedicated by our Governors to the work of supporting the school.
I hope whatever you are doing this weekend that the sun shines on you.
